Freedom Trail® Marks 50th Year with British Encampment
Boston Common, August 13-15, 2010
The British are coming - again! The
Freedom Trail Foundation is hosting the second-ever-in-Boston
re-enactment of the original British Encampment from the watershed
years. On August 13, 14, and 15 the Boston Common will be the stage where Redcoat troops encamped during the dreadful siege of
Boston. The Boston garrison weekend will feature three days of
demonstrations and activities of a typical British 18th century camp. The Encampment is free to the public.
The weekend's program will include: drills
and black powder firing demonstrations, mock tents and bed making,
shoemaking, a medical tent, cooking, clothing and uniforms; a cricket
game, a court marshal, stocks, music and confrontation with colonial militia men. Special Children's activities include: dressing in typical colonial dress, experiencing camp life, photo opportunities, typical games, period demonstrations, and family camp life.
The Encampment begins at 3pm until showdown
on Friday, August 13 as the re-enactors set up camp on the Common.
Planned programming is scheduled between 9am and 6pm on Saturday and
9am and 2pm on Sunday. Breaking camp begins at 2pm on Sunday, August
15.

North End Feasts and Festivals
Transport yourself to Italy this Summer - no passport required!
Throughout
the summer, the historic North End neighborhood is host to one of
Boston's annual traditions offering visitors and locals a chance to
take part in these Italian festivals and celebrations. Two of the more
popular ones that you won't want to miss include The Fisherman's and
St. Anthony's Feasts.
The Fisherman's Feast began in Boston in
1910 with a tradition that goes back to the 16th century in Sciacca
Sicila and is based on the devotion of the fisherman to the Madonna del
Soccorso (Our Lady of Help). This year the Fisherman's Feast will take
place Thursday, August 12 - Sunday, August 15th. On Thursday, the
statue of the Madonna is moved from her home in the Fisherman's Club to
a chapel in the center of the Feast. Throughout the weekend there will
be entertainment and vendors selling food (italian sausages, calmari,
pizza, pasta and much more!) as well as crafts. The Feast culminates on
Sunday night with the spectacular Flight of the Angel.
The
North End invites you to celebrate with them August 27-29 as they
honor their patrons saints, Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy with beautifully
decorated streets, the Pageantry of the Parades and the yearly
opportunity to view the Society's Statue of Saint Anthony of Padua. The
entertainment is continuous and you'll find a sampling of the best
Italian street food - arancini, quahogs, zeppole, cannnoli and gelato - the cultural experience is priceless!
Check out the complete schedule of events and include some feasting-fun in Boston's North End this Summer!
